Although NOT REQUIRED, residents appreciate it tremendously when medical students come in to help set up the room before the surgery. If possible, try to arrive 1 hour before the surgery to set up the room.
General Set Up
- Turn on the computer
- Place one blue chuck on the table in front of the anesthesia machine, and one over the anesthesia cart. These are found in the bottom drawer of the anesthesia cart.
- Put EKG cable on the bed under the pillow.
- Check the ambu-bag to make sure it is present and works (Bag squeezing and bag re-expanding should sound different).
Equipment
- Set up intubation supplies
- Set up at least 2 IV tubings and IV sets
- Draw up "Emergency Drugs"
Double check: MS-MAID
The acronym MS-MAID is helpful for checking if everything is ready to go in your OR:
- M - machine
- S - suction (the one everyone forgets)
- M - monitors
- A - airway, i.e.intubation supplies
- I - IV tubings and IV sets, x2
- D - drugs, drawn up and ready to go
